WORSHIP

BOARD OF CHILD CARE CHAPEL, BALTIMORE, MD

PROJECT DESCRIPTION:

The Board of Child Care is a non-profit entity whose mission is “to preserve children and families by fostering self-esteem, respect for
the community, sense of purpose and life skills needed to achieve their highest potential.”

The Chapel for the Board of Child Care was conceived as an expression of this mission to
provide a special place for worship. The 2,300 SF structure has a low stone entry mass with
minimum light, which contrasts with the sacred Chapel space within the “wooden tent.” The
“tent” space has a dappled quality of light and texture, created by sunlight filtered through three types of glass (clear, textured, and translucent
rice paper). This project won an Award of Excellence from the Northern Virginia Chapter
of the American Institute of Architects.
